Became vegetarian at 12 as I realized animals were my friends and didn't want to eat them. Life can be very simple and uncomplicated at that age.
About the same time realized that what I wanted out of life is to be at peace, but had no idea what I was asking for or how to get it. Ran the gammit of spiritual teachers and teachings from the East that flooded the West in the 60s, and in each case would wake up one day and realize that after whatever time I had devoted to it I didn't feel any different and it was on to the next. The list included Swami Satchitsnanda and integral yoga,nthe Maharishi and TM, A course in Miracles and visits with various Gurus to see what they had to offer. A study of Sufism and the works of Idries Shah , tried the major religions with the same result, moved to Florida and spent time with a Spiritualist Church, then the Philosophy of Absolute Reality and ended with the I Am Teaching. After that was walking along and hit the wall and knew I had to stop all the nonsense. You could say I was a spiritual junkie. For years was stuck in complete oblivion and reached the point where I was bed ridden for 8 weeks and barely able to function. I went to the.hospital and for 4 days was in such pain and misery I prayed for life to please let me die. It was my experience with being in Hell. Upon leaving I realized that trying to have life on my terms had led to complete annihilation and that I had to let go and surrender to whatever life brought my way. I began a process of healing physically, mentally and emotionally which opened the door to spiritual growth. I won't go into detail of all the changes the past 4 years have brought, but whatever has gone on hads been totally beyond my control. I find that finally I have the peace I've sought for so long - much of the time, and it has to do with living completely in the present. As growth of consciousness involves opening our minds to the infinite, the growth and changes are continual. To be honest there is no way I could have imagined or expected ending up feeling like this and experiencing life the way I am. It just isn't possible to know what it's like to feel and see life differently. I fully realize we don't know what we don't know or what lies ahead. I have experienced miracles, and after all I've been through one has to be still being alive. At each step of the way have run into someone or something to comfort and guide me. As of late it's been the writings of Rumi.. And I honestly think this is enough of an introduction.
